What are ADA Accessible Bathrooms?

When it comes to the bathroom, there are a lot of things to take into consideration. For those with disabilities, having an accessible bathroom is a must. But what exactly are ADA accessible bathrooms and who can benefit from them in their homes?

ADA stands for the Americans with Disabilities Act. This act was put into place in 1990 in order to make public places more accessible for those with disabilities. When it comes to the bathroom, there are a few key features that an ADA accessible bathroom must have in order to be compliant.

First, there must be enough space for a wheelchair to maneuver. This means that the doorways should be at least 32 inches wide and there should be enough space for a wheelchair to turn around inside the bathroom.

Second, the fixtures must be easy to use for those with limited mobility. This means that faucets should be easy to turn on and off and toilets should be taller than standard toilets. Grab bars should also be installed near the toilet and shower.

Third, showers must have a seat and a hand-held showerhead. This allows those in wheelchairs to be able to shower without having to transfer out of their chair.

There are many people who can benefit from having an ADA accessible bathroom in their home. This includes people with disabilities, the elderly, and even young children. Having an accessible bathroom can make everyday tasks much easier and can help to make the home more livable for everyone.
